Artist statement
Lucy Shuttleworth is a dynamic young artist who confronts her diagnosis of psychosis directly through her artistic practice. She is determined to share her personal experience with this complex condition by guiding viewers through a diverse array of works, including striking drawings and paintings of her hallucinations, as well as impactful 3D sculptures that encapsulate her experiences. She uses these mediums to portray her experiences adequately and go by the feel of what the piece wants to express rather than sticking to one medium, as she feels it would be a waste to stick to a single medium when there is more to create.
She wants the viewers to catch a glimpse of what it is like to deal with psychosis and inform them through her practice that it’s more than the current misconceptions. Shuttleworth refuses to limit herself to a single medium; she embraces the freedom to explore various forms of expression that best convey her feelings. Through her art, she commands attention to the realities of living with psychosis, challenging the pervasive misconceptions that surround the condition. She is dedicated to dismantling the myths and misinformation propagated by media and film, which often distort public perceptions of this illness.
Her decision to create art based on her hallucinations is a powerful act of therapeutic expression. By transforming turmoil into art, she not only seeks personal relief but also insists on fostering a deeper understanding of psychosis in others.
